The Department of Interior Design and Materials Technology (IDMT) is among the three (3) departments within the Faculty of Built and Natural Environment (FBNE) of Kumasi Technical University (KsTU). It was borne out of the then Furniture Unit of the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) established in 1952.
The Department is proud to place on records that it was the starting point of the Woodwork shop of the University of Education of Winneba, Kumasi Campus. In the light of continuous changes in skills and knowledge requirements of graduates by industry arising from changes in demand of society, the department has continually responded to such changes by changing its course and programme content and name as and when deemed necessary. As a result, the Department has gone through a number of transformations from running Advanced Certificate in Furniture Production to HND in Furniture Design and Construction, HND in Furniture Design and Production, HND in Interior Design Technology, and Bachelor of Technology (BTech) Interior Design Technology with very high career prospects in the Built Environment
Currently, the Department runs three programmes, comprising two undergraduates and one graduate, viz: HND Interior Design Technology; 4-Year BTech. Interior Design Technology (Competency based), and Master of Technology (MTech.) Interior Design and Resource Management.
